Box Construction: Plywood vs. Particleboard

Plywood boxes hold screws firmly over decades of drawer and door use, and resist swelling if water ever reaches them — a real risk under any sink or dishwasher. Particleboard (compressed wood fiber and resin) costs less and works fine in low-moisture areas, but swells permanently if it gets wet, and screw holes loosen faster under repeated stress. We use plywood for sink base cabinets and high-use drawer boxes as a rule, and reserve particleboard, when used at all, for upper cabinets away from moisture.

Door Materials: Solid Wood, MDF, and Thermofoil

Solid wood doors offer genuine stain-grade beauty and can be sanded and refinished over their lifetime, but they expand and contract with Ohio’s humidity swings — a real consideration for painted solid-wood doors, which can develop hairline cracks at joints over years. MDF (medium-density fiberboard) painted doors avoid that joint-cracking problem entirely, since MDF doesn’t have wood grain to move with humidity, making it the preferred substrate for crisp painted shaker doors. Thermofoil (a vinyl laminate over MDF) costs least and cleans easily, but can peel if it gets too close to sustained heat — worth avoiding directly beside a wall oven without a heat shield.

How We Spec Materials by Cabinet Location

Rather than choosing one material standard for an entire kitchen, we spec by location: plywood boxes at the sink base and dishwasher-adjacent cabinets where moisture risk is highest, MDF painted doors throughout for crack-resistant good looks, and solid wood reserved for stained (not painted) door programs where its natural grain is the point rather than a liability.

This location-based approach delivers most of full-plywood construction’s durability benefit without paying a premium on every single box in the kitchen — the cabinets under a window with no plumbing nearby simply don’t carry the same moisture risk as the ones flanking your sink.

Is plywood always better than particleboard?

For structural durability and moisture resistance, yes. Particleboard isn’t inherently bad — it’s a reasonable cost-saver in low-moisture upper cabinets, just a poor choice under sinks.

Why do painted solid-wood doors crack over time?

Solid wood expands and contracts seasonally with humidity, which stresses the paint film at joints. MDF doesn’t move the same way, which is why most modern painted shaker doors use an MDF substrate instead.

Is thermofoil a bad choice?

Not inherently — it’s durable and easy to clean at a lower cost. The one real caution is heat exposure near ovens, where it can peel over time without a heat shield.
