LVL, Steel, or Leave It Alone: How the Beam Decision Actually Gets Made
When a load-bearing wall comes out, something must carry what it carried. The engineering conversation sounds intimidating, but the decision tree is surprisingly readable once someone explains the variables: span length, the load above, and how much beam depth your ceiling can hide.
Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) handles most Toledo residential spans up to about sixteen feet economically. It’s dimensionally predictable, works with wood-frame connections, and two or three plies sized by the span tables cover the typical kitchen-to-dining opening. Costs stay reasonable and any competent framing crew installs it correctly.
Steel enters when spans stretch past LVL’s comfort or when you want a flush ceiling with minimal structural depth.
