Kitchen Workflow: Designing for How You Actually Cook

Workflow planning goes a layer deeper than zones or the work triangle: it maps the actual sequence of movement a household follows through the kitchen during real activities — cooking dinner, unpacking groceries, packing school lunches, cleaning up after a meal. Two kitchens with identical zone layouts can have very different workflow quality depending on small details like door swing direction or which way a drawer opens relative to the person using it.

Mapping Your Own Workflow

Before finalizing any layout, we ask clients to walk through their three or four most common kitchen activities out loud, in the existing kitchen if possible. This surfaces friction points that don’t show up on a tape measure — a cabinet door that hits the refrigerator when both are open, a drawer that requires stepping around someone at the sink, a trash can that’s a diagonal walk from the main prep counter.

Common Workflow Mistakes We Fix

Appliance doors that swing into each other’s path when opened simultaneously. Trash and recycling positioned away from the prep zone, adding unnecessary steps to the most frequent motion in any kitchen. Dish storage on the opposite side of the kitchen from the dishwasher, undoing the point of clustering the cleanup zone. None of these show up in a floor plan sketch — they only surface when you actually walk through the motions.
